Wrexham A.F.C is a Welsh professional soccer team competing in the National League, England’s fifth tier of professional soccer. Despite being founded in 1864, the club hasn’t won any major silverware and is almost unknown to the world. But a change is expected as the team was recently taken over by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The duo expressed their desire to acquire the team in September 2020 and by November 2020 the Wrexham Supporters Trust Board, which owned the club, voted in favor of the deal. The stars are ambitious to turn this otherwise small team into a “global force”.

Reynolds and McElhenney have confirmed their intention to develop the squad so the team can return to the Sky Bet League Two. During the negotiations about the club’s acquisition, the Wrexham Supporters Trust Board had revealed that potential investors were prepared to immediately invest around $2.5 million into the team.

One of Soccer’s Oldest Clubs

Wrexham. A.F.C is the oldest club in Wales and the third oldest professional soccer club in the world. It has never played in England’s top-flight but has managed to reach the FA Cup’s quarter-finals on three separate occasions. It has also played in the European Cup Winners’ Cup during the 75/76 season, reaching the quarterfinals.

They play their home games at the Racecourse Ground, which is the oldest international stadium that is still being used. The venue was opened in 1807 and reconstructed for soccer in 1864.

While the road ahead is long, Wrexham supporters are excited about Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s commitment to transform their modest team into a soccer powerhouse.
