Couple Born on Same Day in Same Hospital Celebrate 50th Birthday

Celebrating a milestone such as the 50th birthday is big enough of an event but things are a bit more special for this Michigan couple. The married couple was fatefully born on the same day, in the same hospital, and just recently, they had the chance to celebrate the special occasion.

Doug & Lynda McCready — The Luckiest Couple

April 7th, 1970, was their birthday date and both were born just hours apart, at Spectrum Health Blodget Hospital in Grand Rapids. The couple seemed to be destined to be together from day one. Even the fact that Lynda had to move to California when she was just one year old didn’t stop the couple from ending up together.

However, Lynda’s grandparents lived in a cottage on Bills Lake — so occasional summer trips back to Michigan weren’t rare. What’s interesting is that Doug’s family’s summer cottage was right next to Lynda’s grandparents.’ In the end, those summers were what started Lynda and Doug’s serendipitous love story, spanning for nearly three decades now.

The couple’s romance didn’t start until they were 16. They used to hang out together, swim, boat, and Doug noticed how often Lynda smiled. She, on the other hand, remembers him as a shy boy who was “very fun to hang out with.” Doug realized he had feelings for Lynda but didn’t tell her until she had departed for California.

Love Letters, Phone Calls, & the Detroit Lions

Doug sent Lynda a letter but didn’t receive one back. Finally, he got the courage to call and ask her if she got it but she didn’t know how to react and said she’s flattered but not interested. When Lynda came back to Michigan next year, she decided to give Dough a try and asked him to go to the movies. She was shocked when he refused, saying that the Detroit Lions are on and wouldn’t miss this.

Looking back on that decision, Doug says “As I always say, I was setting the precedent that once we got married she would know that Sunday afternoons are for football and for me to watch my team!”

The Birthday Couple Finally Together

It wasn’t until 1989, at 19 years of age, that Lynda and Doug were finally on the same page and their romance blossomed. Three years later, Lynda moved back to Grand Rapids, to join their first birthday celebration together. Not long after, they got married and since then, they’ve had three sons — Jon, Matt, and David.

They’ve had plans to celebrate their 50th birthday in California, which were canceled by the ongoing pandemic. However, they decided to make it a special day in other ways and namely, by returning to the very place their love first blossomed.
