Jay-Z Gave an Unintentionally Ironic Speech at the Grammys
History repeated itself at the 2024 Grammy Awards, as Jay-Z had a moment reminiscent of Kanye at the 2009 VMAs. Interestingly, the same women were pulled into the drama, despite the fact that neither of them seemed interested in stirring the pot. Read on to see how Beyoncé and Taylor Swift were, once again, pitted against each other by men who never met a microphone they didn’t love.
Jay-Z’s Speech
Taylor Swift won Album of the Year at the Grammys for Midnights. The feat is even more impressive considering that this was her fourth Album of the Year win, making her the only woman in history to receive the honor so many times. However, Swift’s accomplishment was called into question when Jay-Z addressed the fact that Beyoncé wasn’t even nominated. He said, “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that, most Grammys, never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work.”
The Internet’s Reaction
The similarities between Jay-Z’s speech at the Grammys and Kanye grabbing the microphone from Taylor Swift at the VMAs weren’t lost on the internet. People were quick to point out that in both scenarios, the musicians in question were saying that Beyoncé deserved the awards more than Swift. And, in both scenarios, neither woman seemed very pleased with the situation. One social media user pointed out, “Jay-Z took a page out of Kanye’s book to roast the Grammys LOL.” Another wrote, “Jay-Z’s full Kanye moment. It’s all happening.” While a third expressed, “Jay-Z is ‘imma let you finish’ away from being Kanye #GRAMMYs.”
Wouldn’t it be nice if Jay-Z and Kanye had expressed their opinions after the show, rather than ruining another artist’s moment? After all, it’s not like they don’t have other platforms to make their voices heard.
